If you were capable of any kind of analysis you’d see that it is glaringly obvious that’s certain sections of the media are pushing for lockdown to be relaxed or scrapped entirely.

My point (which you yet again missed) is that whilst the government may have been swayed by this initially, it *might* be that Boris has seen sense and changed his plans against this move wanted by the media.
I thought it was Tory doners that wanted to lift the restrictions and get the economy moving? Most journos have a very high opinion of themselves and only think they are driving the agenda. The Gov spokesman of the day in the briefings bats, ignores or answers usually blandy any ciritical questions from the media.

Vj day is in August thus it's the end of hostilities. That is the date of the surrender of Japan.

Yes the official signing ceremony happened o the 2nd of September but August 1945 marked the the surrender of Japan.

Please try again

I’m thinking donors have friends in certain areas - look at the state of the Telegraph this week for example.

It’s the same libertarian circles pushing lifting the lockdown in the US they’re just not as influential here. Also it’s worth noting people on this forum predicted it happening.

The fact every decision was led by media and public demand does suggest this. Every daily briefing they are responding to whatever was the focus of criticism over the previous days. Nothing has been proactive.
it was only after football stopped football that mass events were stopped.
Exactly right. What little lockdown we've had has come because of public pressure.

It was only a few weeks ago we had Johnson talking about stopping football saying "We are considering the question of banning major public events, including sporting fixtures. The scientific advice is this has little effect on the spread." and Vallance saying "On average, one person infects two or three others. You therefore have a very low probability of infecting a large number of people in a stadium." and "most of the transmission tends to take place with friends and colleagues, in close environments - not in the big environments.".

It was the PL and EFL, two organisations not exactly known for being pro-active and forward thinking, that called a halt to games.

Imagine Vallance rolling out that statement (which suggests a large R value) and not even batting an eyelid.

Herd immunity was blatantly the strategy from Day 1.

It's pretty obvious that yet again something was leaked to the press to try and understand public position on it

This has been their plan throughout. Leak stuff to the press, see which things get a positive reaction and then go with that. Just utterly spineless, an appalling excuse for leadership.

We are a nation of idiots though. Half the population is utterly brain dead. These people don't care about VE day, they probably don't even know what VE stands for, but they're using it as an excuse for a piss up while ignoring all rules. No doubt they will be out clapping the NHS on Thursday night too, despite not caring about potentially spreading the disease, hypocritical wankers

The horse has bolted let’s lock the doors UK 'to bring in 14-day air passenger quarantine'
Doesn't matter unless it is strongly enforced - something UK govt hasn't been willing to do so far.
We've had it here for certain countries since beginning of March and for anyone entering the country since march 16th.
You get a big red sticker for the front of the house/flat. Daily unscheduled police checks. Big fine if you break it, break it a few times then you're removed to a govt quarantine centre (or jail).

Apparently of 73 countries where data is available we're the only who havent been enforcing some sort of quarantine or testing procedure on those entering the country.

And on that note...

Ridiculous.

It makes sense in a kind of it’s too late what can we do wringing our hands kind of way. Fair to say if we are the most infected nation then no point tracking only those that come in. However at first when Italy and Spain were out in front it was pretty criminal allowing 3000 fans to come from Madrid

Using that logic you wouldn't bother with lock down.

Exactly.

While most have us have been making massive sacrifices for the last two months, once again our advantage of being an island nation is not used.

Flights still landing with people that have come from fuck knows where, just allowed to waltz straight in and join the queue at Homebase.

Makes a mockery out of it all and makes you question the point of staying in.

It’s only worth taking action once the R value has fallen which is achieved by taking action.

Remember when it wasn’t worth closing schools?

Or stopping football?

Or how as stocks build it’s slowly turning out that maybe masks will be worth wearing after all.

Over the last week it’s been highlighted how other countries are controlling borders and travellers more and suddenly its worth considering us doing the same. Those silly foreigners were foolishly pursuing policies the effectiveness of which wasn’t proven, what idiots! But actually it turns out it’s a good idea after all. Bravo for the British government for taking effective action!

One could be forgiven for thinking measures become useful just as they become technically feasible and politically tenable. Of course, that can never be proven because they can always say “we’re acting as the science changes” and focus on whatever paper suits the argument at the time.
