Govt say may be a further easing of travel restrictions from June 16th - but UK a separate case to rest of Europe with the current mortality levels. Govt here expecting UK to spike due to public not following protocols (beach pictures etc. all over the media here).
Will keep you informed. Got a meeting with a Govt minister beginning of next week so will see what off the record info I can get

There’s also the fact that the lockdown hasn’t been policed at all, and that’s because of direction from the government. At the start they were policing it and right wing Twitter got all up in arms about the police state. Government ministers started telling the police off for enforcing the law.

Then the absolute mess of messaging. Vulnerable people are allowed out despite us still being at level 4 apparently. Sports starting up. Dates given for pubs to be open soon. Retrospectively changing the rules to allow people to use their “instinct”. Bringing back Parliament despite them being able to work from home.

It's Johnson's Libertarian approach that has caused so much of this. It's been mixed messages and a lack of will to take a strong hand.
People aren't going to be arguing with firm regulation when the backdrop of deaths is there for all to see.
Trying to imitate other countries exits from lockdown (which were applied and enforced differently) is just further weak leadership.
1000 pound fines for breaking a quarantine that is being applied far too late in the day sums the weak approach.

No, I am not an expert on what an R is or a curve on a graph but if the numbers going into the graphs aren't generated in exactly the same way then it's not a reliable comparison.

Excess death data is comparable. Unless you get into silly conspiracy theories. The daily figures aren’t but no one really pays much attention to them.

Im generally quite the libertarian, but like war a pandemic is an exceptional event where the normal rules don’t apply.

A tight lockdown could’ve been achieved with more strict policing. Just like other countries. It would’ve meant an order of magnitude fewer deaths and as we’ve seen in NZ lockdown ending far earlier.

Agree. Looking at the data from around the world the best economic play was an earlier, harder lockdown. As I highlighted this morning we’re looking at more deaths and more disruption.

I don’t agree with the view off many that they intentionally went for herd immunity while pretending otherwise. I think their minds were genuinely changed when the study came out predicting 500k deaths.

I think our performance is down to two things:
1) Johnson and Cummings are heavily influenced by American libertarians, favouring the market, small government etc. Everything they’ve done they have tried to have the softest government touch going, woolly messaging, few laws, little enforcement. The only time they’ve really deviated from this is the furlough scheme and for them that’s a lesser evil than benefits or UBI. I think the resistance to lockdown was to “protect the economy”. Short term thinking that will harm the economy in the long run.

2) They’re just really, really poor and incompetent. The talent has all been purged. There are no sensible tories now who, while you might not agree with them completely politically, you’d know they aren’t idiots.

It’s back to normal now here apart from non EU countries (apart from UK) can’t enter yet and working from home is continuing.

I think the whole concept of nationality is silly TBH. From a technical point if you’re born there that’s your nationality. But identity is funny. I know people who aren’t black but have black heritage and are proud of it, ditto Scots/Welsh/Irish/African/Indian.
