Imagine playing a big part in the makings of Off The Wall, The Color Purple and The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air and that not even being the tip of the iceberg. What a life Quincy Jones lived.

Feel for you Houchen, we lost our 16 yo Border Terrier a year ago tomorrow...was in bits, got a Pedigree Staffordshire Bull Terrier a few weeks later, keeps me on my toes 24/7 😁
My missus said to me, literally 10 minutes after he died, "We'll get another dog", but at our ages (74 & 71), I don't think I could go through the hurt I feel, again, and any dog we would get would probably outlive us. I hope you're over the loss of your Staffy now. It's not something I could go through again. My little Harvey would have been 10 in 2 weeks time. It was so heartbreaking to see him struggling to breathe. 😔

My beautiful little Chihuahua passed away this morning at the vets. He had a lot of fluid on his lungs and could barely breathe. Missing him already. 😔View attachment 39467
Really sorry to hear your news Houch. It’s an awful thing to happen. They are he best companion in the world and totally reliant on you for their well being. Takes a huge chunk of your heart away.

Our Border is 11 and often thought would I get another when we lose him. I’m 71 and wonder if I could give a new dog an active and fulfilling life. Also our current dog feels unique and could another dog replace the love we have for him.

I feel the same way. I'm same age as you, but have my missus to look after as her full time carer. It's weird, but I keep looking at the time, thinking "I need to take him out for his walk soon."
I won't get another dog. Been through this sorrow enough times now. Breaks my heart. Thanks for the caring message.

I'm 70 now (wife is 65) and had very similar thoughts to you both regarding getting another Dog...you can't replace a Dog you loved so much.
Thought very hard about getting another Dog for all the reasons you both mention but took the plunge and Got our Staffy, he's a great dog tbh and is by my side 24/7 and he gets plenty of exercise etc (live in a rural location), my Daughter has 100% promised that if he outlives me (us) he will go to her, that helped make the decision in truth.
Totally understand how you're feeling Houchen it's heartbreaking losing a much loved Pet.

Sorry to hear your sad news Houch, lost my Belgian Shepherd this time last year and I can still end up in tears about it. Never saw or heard Mrs Red cry like it when she went.
Hopefully you will feel a bit better soon and remember the happy times you had together.

Houch, I really feel for you.
However, I too am ancient (71 ;) ) but have fairly recently taken delivery of this lump of a two-year old Segugio/GS cross. She's a Cyprus rescue, having spent much of those two years in a cage.
I too had great reservations about taking on a new mutt after losing our near-seventeen year old Kelpie cross who I adored.
She can be hard work, admittedly, and terrifies everyone who comes to the door by shouting extremely viciously at them, but they quickly find what a sweetheart she really is (thank God it's all bluster - she's never bitten).
Think long and hard before you make a decision.
(BTW, having done a DNA test, we found out that she's also actually 4% Chihuahua... challenging, huh? 🤣).

That's a beautiful dog Houch.

They're only small but they leave a big hole when they've gone.
He sure has, Sir Ernie. Shed many tears since yesterday. Without really thinking, I keep looking for him in every room and in our garden. Our little bungalow is empty without him. The whole neighbourhood knew him and loved him. He was the gentlest and friendliest little boy. 😔

I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way in text, but I'd recommend that if you can then get another dog. I got through losing my 20 month old boy purely because we had our girl at the same time. She really helped me with the grief, especially as it was sudden/unexpected too.

Sorry for your loss HH. You will have a massive hole in your life but luckily so many brilliant memories of your beautiful boy. If you do get another dog, consider getting a rescue from the Dogs Trust or similar and give a brilliant life to a dog that probably hasn't had one yet.

Houch - maybe in a couple of months, you might want to consider what our daughterin law did. She lost her blind and deaf dog last year, he was 15 years old. She decided no other dog would match him so did not want to replace him. Now, she is effectively a dog hotel to neighbours and friends. They leave their dogs with her for holidays and overnights and she loves it. Different dogs with different needs just suits her fine. Also, as she works from home it's a little extra pocket money and company for her.

So sorry for the loss of your boy ccfc992. Sadly, at my age (71), I just feel that I'm getting too old now to give another dog the attention they so much need. Maybe one day, I'll change my mind. 😒

If ever I do get another dog, it would definately be a rescue dog. I hate the thought of all those beautiful animals living in kennels without loving owners.

I like that idea, Sbarcher. I don't actually know many people that have dogs near me, but maybe an ad in the local Facebook pages? I probably wouldn't charge anything either. We get by financially, so maybe just the cost of dog food? Yes, I really like that idea.

Sorry to hear about your boy Houch.

Can't lie, losing my dog affected me more than losing any of my family members has.

For those saying they're too old for another dog maybe fostering is an option. Always seems to be a shortage of people who will do that.

Amazing isn't it, the amount of post, including me who are touched by the passing of a dog. A celebrity dies it one or two RIPs and onto the piss taking 🤣
I truly didn't expect the amount of replies and reactions, Rob. I am truly touched with everyone's kind words. I suppose it just goes to show that we really are a nation of dog lovers.

Strangely, I don't remember getting upset when my mum died. Mind you, I was brought up in care for the whole of my childhood, so maybe I didn't feel so upset because of the horrible childhood I had. I think that's why I love animals so much. Their love isn't false.
Maybe think about fostering at a later date, but not for a while. I need to get over losing my wee best friend first.

Houch really feel for you. A pet is part of the family just like anyone else and it is truly heartbreaking. We lost our last 2 dogs in the same week, nearly killed me and I like others said never again. It lasted a few years but 18 months ago Steve joined us, ex racer greyhound and he hasnt taken the place of the others he's his own dog and we love him for that.

For those who have said we're to old to have another you could consider an oldie when you think you might like to share your home with another furry friend. Fostering is also a great option (you will fail at some point though
