Got a feeling that all these candidates are quite capable of losing the red wall back to Labour and losing blue seats to the Lib Dems. I’ll give Javid some credit for telling it how it is, I don’t think he was scaremongering earlier and I think he’ll actually be the Tories best chance against labour.

His line of 'some people now think Labour is better' showed the kind of leadership his party needs

Interesting spreadsheet of announced policy for each candidate so far

I know they're not vote winners but this country is facing some massive challenges.

Food security.
Energy costs and energy security.
A massive increase in over 65s and a reduction in the younger demographic
Crumbling waterways.
Getting brexit finished off including sorting NI.
Cost of living crisis.
Climate change.

The list goes on.

We really need politicians with some vision instead we've got a load of hapless tory flag shaggers going on about benefits and tax cuts and an opposition led by the world's wettest lettuce.

I reckon it’ll end up being Truss who’ll be another disaster and revert to the nonsense culture wars and taking photos on tanks.

She wouldn't be as good at it as Johnson though.

Maybe I'm naive(!) but I'm fairly sure the party will narrow it down to two 'sane' candidates, and ignore the absolute nutters.

Which one wil expel Mo Farah ?
He says he’s outed himself as an illegal immigrant to challenge perceptions, I can’t help but feel he’s specifically talking about the government.

So apart from the NHS doctor of the year and an Olympic champion what have illegal immigrants ever done for us?

Last night Starmer on channel 4 news said he’s taking policy advice off Mr Blair - that’s a vote winner

Can’t see it myself I doubt she will get through

I never understand why members are allowed to select leaders as they generally have no interest in electability

Members would select Starmer ahead of Hunt (they certainly would Reeves she should put her name forward) so it’s pointless getting him through

Mordaunt has second amount of backers.

You have neatly avoided this so far but who do you want to win?

Im hardly avoiding it

Hunt won’t win so it’s who will stand and defeat Starmer

In thatcher and even major days most of the cabinet would have swiped Stammering Starmer away like the political Pygmy is. Times clearly have changed when the likes of Grant Shapps is in the mix. The only remarkable thing about him is his non moving hair.

Sitting in a Tank and wearing a fur hat in Estonia isn’t very convincing either.

I get the impression Javid isn’t popular - he’s again not a good speaker - nice but bland.

The fringe candidates will be gone by Thursday anyway

Where do you go? Sunak has baggage abs isn’t liked - the rich thing won’t matter - but he has enemies including Mr Johnson

So I guess penny mordaunt

I suspect he’s too busy thinking about the shower in his Tory version of the jungle programme. 🤣🤣

Well one candidate has of course appeared in a swimsuit

We all know why Javid isn’t popular and it’s not because of how he speaks.

So yes Mordaunt the lady who just put out a few minutes of flag waving and no substance. Sounds right

Im not sure of the actual figure but I’ve heard the average age of Tory members is anywhere between 57-70 years old. Not ideal when someone is being picked to lead the country and address some of the longer term issues we face, like the ones Clint’s highlighted above

I’m still to hear anyone set out their vision for the country and how they plan to address the short and long term issues. Hopefully that will come.

No I don’t think it’s anything to do with his colour and members would vote him in ahead of hunt without doubt and they’d certainly want Sunak

he’s not popular with MPs

The gender and race mix of the candidates is something that would never happen in the Labour Party which I suppose is the most interesting thing about the line up

Not sure that’s right if you’re implying what I think you are BSB. I remember seeing polling where Sunak was most popular amongst the members until NIC increase and his wife’s tax issues

Edit - Grendel beat me to it

Labour to table a motion of no confidence in the government today.

MPs to vote on it tomorrow.

Starmer in showboating and wasting time shocker

I am basing that on the polling of Conservative members in the last leadership contest.

Javid and Sunak are some of the most popular Tories and Patel one of the least. Ethnicity has nothing to do with it.

johnson would have beat anyone - Sunak would have beaten hunt - Javid would and in fact how do you explain this?

Starmer in showboating and wasting time shocker

Aw diddums, someone holding your boys in blue to account and you don't like it

It either results in a general election or, far more likely, Tories (including leadership candidates) suddenly have to go back on the record supporting Johnson after spending days/weeks saying they have no confidence in him and Labour get to square it as the whole party being the problem, not just Johnson.

And it's astonishing you can accuse Starmer of showboating and time wasting after you've spent the last few years backing Johnson.

Javid gave it a good stab (I say good stab, I’m obviously judging him by the field) yesterday and at least doesn’t seemed to have abandoned levelling up.

He’s the only one I can see giving Labour something to worry about on current form but I doubt he’ll make the final 2. This should be a make or break leadership election for the Tories and I personally think if they don’t go for Javid they may as well go for one of the lesser known candidates as it will at least be seen as a clean sweep. I would think that Labour are hoping for Truss, she’s setting herself up as continuity Boris which may among members have some currency but I think the electorate has grown tired of him, couple that with her having neither the charisma or natural ability to lie on the hoof as Boris she’ll be a gift, even more than Sunak.
