We got gazumped by someone with more money.

We put in an offer of £110,000 and they offered the full asking price of £2.5m.

    Bleeding royals!

Exactly. If it were Chelsea or Arsenal or Man City or United, the ground would be full of Coventry locals supporters wanting 'their' glory team to win.

So if it was Chelsea v Man Utd , Chelsea v Arsenal, or Chelsea v Liverpool at the bridge, would that get a higher attendance than Chelsea v Stoke?
Why state the obvious when that would be the same at every club.

    People are missing the point.
They are comparing Stoke with, ManC, Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal etc.and forgetting that it could have been Newport, Forest Green, Stevenage, Port Vale....etc.

Don't get that point at all.

We are now a small team. Around Coventry town centre you will almost certainly find more Chelsea, Man U, Man City, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal shirts than you will City shirts.

If City played Liverpool here the ground would be a awash with 'Coventry' Liverpool supporters.

If Chelsea played Liverpool the Chelsea fans would totally outnumber the Liverpool supporters.

That's my point. We play a glamour club we are likely to get less Coventry fans. You have to remember that as an example, a lot of fans are maybe Liverpool fans, but then may also have a soft spot for their home town club of Coventry City too. City play Stoke they will support the City. City play Liverpool, they would support Liverpool.

They come and watch the City and we win, they may come back as City fans again for another game.

Oh, Misinterpreted it! Thought you meant that Coventry fans would opt for the Man Utd game over Stoke etc which is why I said that most other clubs attendances would also indicate that if playing Man Utd instead of Stoke.

Just thought I'd keep you all up to scratch with Newport (IW), my local team. They have reached the last 32 in the FA Vase. I see Coventry United are still in it as well. They play Bromsgrove Sporting tomorrow (Wed). If they get through, they will be away to Wisbech Town in the last 32. Get along and give them some support. It's what local footie is all about!
(p.s. The Final is at Wembley on Sunday 20th May. You never know....)

Wisbech 'fans' have a certain reputation so beware....
My local team, Norwich CBS, are also in the last 32 & playing away at Leighton Buzzard. Shame its away as their ground is at Norfolk FA HQ & is 200 yards from my house....

It's now a glamour tie for us these days! We are a league 2 side however you wish that to be different. Having an established premier league side at the Ricoh will be great.
I too wish it had been Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea or Man City, Liverpool or Man Utd because I think we would have seen 25 to 30k
As it's Stoke a little less glamour and we will get beat, I suspect 15 to 20k is more realistic.
Shaqiri, Crouch, Walters, and a few others will be nice to see at the Ricoh.

Exactly so and whilst we are desperate to get out of this league considering Robins has 'built a reasonable side it does take time to build a very good squad, we are ticking along relatively ok atm January will be the next chance to step up again .....fingers crossed

    shaqiri
    jese
    affelay
    chupa moting
    crouch
    allen
    butland
    shawcross

some have won champions league, others play for or have played for national team, some at big euro clubs like barca, shalke, man u in past etc

Not sure they'll play that much of a weakened team either. They might have some fringe players they want to give game time to but I wouldn't expect Man Utd style wholesale changes. Not like they're playing Champions League games every week.

Why would they throw away a cup run. Its pretty much the only chance a club like that has of winning something.

Totally agree. Think they will play pretty much a full strength side.

    Really looking forwards to it.

While I part agree with this, I think had we got Chelsea at home, the fans in the home end would be those who went to Wembley.

Of the thousands who went to Wembley in April, the majority were Coventry fans who may have been around the 90s who have become so disengaged with the club that they may not have been to a match in years.

While there is a lot of glory fans in Coventry, there are still thousands who are Coventry fans who have lost the will.

Stoke are a decent example of a sizeable city where success has developed a fan base. They were averaging 14,000 in the Championship, yet they have sold out pretty much all of their home games since in the Premier League. That's a 13,000 increase. That 13,000 will be made up of people who supported Stoke, but were not at the level of fan compared to the 14,000.

What's with all the gloom ? Cov City v Stoke at home in the FACup. There will be 20,000 at the Ricoh no doubt.
They'll bring a good following and by the time we play each other we could be at the top of League Two, and they'll have just sacked Hughes. Happy Days !

Agreed BBR. We have to remember where we are and whilst fans may consider us and Stoke to be similar in terms of club stature they’re currently 3 leagues above us and have some quality players in their ranks.

And if you take the first 3 letters of Stoke, turn them backwards and insert an 'i', you get Otis.

good for you. for the majority it does hence why we get high attendances for matches vs big teams(chelsea, boro when in prem) and away too(11k to man u,arsenal)

Same really, if I wanted to watch based on who played for the other team I'd just support them instead.

    Bloody hell I'm dense.

I looked at that, took the O and I and S and T out as requested, but then tried to work out what letters I was left with from the word Sophisticated, minus those 4 letters.

I came up with 'cadetship' and 'pastiched.' [IMG]
