Roughly 0.016% of the country obtains a visa to visit Qatar each year. I'd bet most have family ties or business interests over there. I don't think based on those numbers you can conclude that "We" are happy to go on holiday there.

Qatar Airways handled 1.6 million passengers on the London to Doha routes back in 2019 (pre-pandemic and not including the other UK airports which also had a fair number of travellers). I would say from my experience that around 80% of people travelling to Qatar seem go through it and transit somewhere else, but even so. It is still money in the coffers as the airline is state owned.

You want to add the other middle eastern nations in (including the UAE and therefore Dubai where many people do holiday), and you have a hell of a lot of people willing to financially contribute to these sort of countries. Where do you draw the line on that as appropriate or not? Someone taking the cheapest flight (which to Asia often is Qatar Airways)? A week all-inclusive at The Palm? 'Happy to holiday' is a bit of a red herring I think.

China specialises in abuse and brutality - but they are an economic power house so I guess that’s ok

I wouldn't expect our Government or FIFA to do anything of course. But maybe some teams with more enlightened Government support might walk out if things go badly in Qatar.

our government? Lol I’m sure every other government is outraged at going there

Well our Government talks about leaving the European Convention on Human Rights and is very keen to send asylum seekers to Rwanda. Of European countries only Belarus doesn't sign up to the Convention so I think it is safe to say that there are many countries' Governments who are more concerned about human rights than ours.

Probably a shit take, but adding Spain to the list of squads that look a bit underwhelming. Both them and Germany look a bit piss compared to normal for me.

So they will not be going then?

I'll be quite interested to see how Moukoko gets on if he features for Germany. A pretty frightening prospect and I think stronger than Haaland at the same age

I flew with Etihad once and watched Bohemian Rhapsody and they edited out any kind of reference to Mercury's relationships with men, it was a farce. There are likely going to be players there who are gay, yet their sexuality isn't tolerated - it's time to stop pandering to these 'rules' and call it what it is - bigotry and discrimination.

I doubt they could stop players wearing rainbow laces.

Though I see FIFA have told Denmark not to wear training tops with human rights messaging. Bloody political extremists and their desire to see people treated fairly nonsense.

One question I wanted to ask was, will any Championship clubs have players playing in the tournament (I guess they will have) and will any clubs have games postponed as a result?

On Monday Clive was saying that if the 3 players Reading have at the World Cup all make it to the semi finals (Canada/Senegal/Ghana), our game could be postponed, but think that's pretty unlikely!

We play Reading on QFs weekend so surely a decision will be made after the 2nd round matches?

It's also frustrating me how long we have to wait for a proper European world cup again too.

Germany '06 was great but then we have to wait two turns minimum before we can have it again, so South Africa - Brazil. Then they give the next European one to Russia which is barely a European country and certainly not within the spirit of 1 in 3 in Europe. So now we have to do Qatar - US (who, along with Mexico, have had it twice since England) and wait until 2030 for the Europe one.

At that point it will already be 24 years since a proper Europe world cup, now the only bid for 2030 that European is Spain-Portugal. They have to go up against Argentina-Chile-Uruguay-Paraguay plus a solo big from Morocco.

I just want a proper enclosed tournament in a football mad powerhouse. It doesn't have to even be here, give it to Spain or Italy or something but it's a fucking trek waiting for them.

On the way to Heathrow with the wife, best mate and youngest. 9 months after arriving 10 weeks premature he’s flying to to a World Cup on World Premature Day. If you get the chance check out Bliss and the stuff they do. Them and places like Walsgrave are miricle workers.

Land first thing tomorrow. Got an open mind on what to expect (aside from having to use lots of P20!). Let’s hope the lads do the business and we’re there for a month 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 GSTK

I'm sorry but I believe the notion of spreading the sport to be based purely on marketing opportunities for large commercial enterprises not for football and basically the world cup should go between South America and Europe with 1 in 5 going elsewhere.

Just watching SSN, they have a "migrant worker" there giving it chat in his signed England shirt.

I just don't buy it, any other world cup this doesn't happen. Not even Russia.

The optics on this competition are in hot focus, all the PR I find unbelievable. Now it's in full swing I guess it will be overwhelmed by the "festival of football".

Air conditioned pitches anoy me too. It's not that hot.
