Recruitment has been shocking (18 Viewers)

Many judged Gyokeres by this point, some clowns even saying they preferred Biamou

For every Gyökeres, there's a Waghorn and Beavon that people judged early on. I'm desperate for Haji and Simms to do a Gyökeres or McNulty.

Gyökeres was a freak of nature and has continued to develop.

I hate to talk about the money because we know that it does not buy you success but it's frustrating knowing they look far from a finished article at the price we paid.

Thankfully, in the stands, people are clearly still behind the new players. Even When Haji couldn't control a simple pass yesterday, the moans and groans were minimal.

If we’d have kept to the “common sense model” (and we can brand it however we like, Brentford or Brighton but just common sense:

Buy young players with proven potential at either the league below or fringe prem or cheaper euro leagues for up to £2m

Have a couple of older heads in midfield and defence)

Then I think most on here could have seen the strategy and would be less concerned.

We’ve had a £35m windfall that we’ve not ever had before and two players in particular don’t fit the “common sense” model.

With the Wright and Kitching money we could have easily got 6 decent players in and had a much deeper squad.

I think that sums up the mood of the fans. Maybe King too.

Spent all summer recruiting for 3 at the back with wing backs, knowing that it's a declining trend hardly used by any other clubs. I wouldn't let them spend another penny. It's farcical.

'Proven potential', what does that even mean? Its an oxymoron surely?

The problem is that selling clubs know when a club has received a large windfall and will demand more in fees, as has happened with Kitching. I think he'll turn into a good player at this level - hopefully, the £4m is dependent on promotion, so then it wouldn't matter too much.

“Common sense” signings:

Latibeaudiere

JDS (not expensive, calculated risk, not old)

So-so:

Thomas right age but not really played at a decent level much.

Tats, right age, international, but relegated and maybe lightweight for the Champ

Simms, right age, proven at level but could cost £8m so potentially expensive.

Collins, at the point of signing we hadn’t offloaded Moore and had the golden glove winner as first choice. Biggish fee for a backup keeper when there are plenty of options for emergency loans from the Prem in times of injury crisis.

MVE, age, played at decent level, big fee though - similar to Simms.

Not common sense:

Wright - could have got 3 decent strikers in for his fee.

Kitching - 2 decent midfielders

Coming out of last year we had one contracted centre half. That had to be fixed and it has been. It’s great if other signings hit the ground running but it’s often not the way. When you think of some of our best players in the recent past they’ve taken time to settle. 17 games is not enough time.

We signed centre backs and full backs that can play wing back, it's hardly some specialist position

Have we had any threads of possibility, who MR could (conceivably) be looking to sign in January?

You would have thought with the money we spent the players we bought in particularly the two striker's coulf control a ball, hold it up and bring others into play and be strong enough to retain possession! I only ask that the players have a basic skill set really🤔

Yeah fair, buying Binks for £1-2m for example seems more logical than us paying nearly £5m for Kitching but time will tell, I think they wanted a ‘try before you buy’ with Binks but we should have agreed a fee first with them.
Players like Miles Leaburn over Wright would have also fit that model. Sakamoto seems the right sort of £1m risk that could pay off in that Brentford model style.
If we signed Binks and Leaburn for example for a total of £5m let’s say for arguements sake, we would have saved £7-8m (excluding the add ons which would be on top of that) for other signings around that price.
Never would I have thought I’d see us spending £4.5m and £7.7m on players and I guess if they turned out to be light years above everybody else we’d be dancing for joy but I guess so far Kitching doesn’t seem that much better than Binks and Wright doesn’t seem to have that killer instinct in him when he plays

MVE is one I’m really excited to see if we get a tune out of. For the potential he has £3.5m seems a fair figure and one that could easily turn into a bigger fee if he does well. Yet to see from him what I was hoping for but I have faith he will come good.

Where would you see Sakamoto going for us to make a significant profit on him?

Just can't understand why people are failing to see that it's the loss of Hamer late on that has screwed us. Bar Vik going on mad runs our whole game was based on him turning defence to attack and breaking the lines with clever passes.

It utterly mad we didn't get a replacement and/or back up in the summer. We were very lucky that Hamer stayed fit last season was a bit mental not to be chasing a back up even if we did believe he was staying.

You could see Simms get in decent positions yesterday but the balls never came. We just don't have the player to make those passes. January is crucial but I'm not writing off either of the strikers until we have a fit ballplayer in the team

Kitching looks like a proper player to me. He has a touch of class about him and seems to be constantly reading the game. Once he's used to his team mates, he'll be quality.

With Simms and Haji you can see the quality in glimpses, hopefully with a proper CM to replace Allen (I'm not a Allen hater, just think his position needs improving) feeding balls through, and controlling the space better, they will come good.

MVE is the biggest head scratcher. The guys meant to be lightning, but he hardly ever knocks the ball up field, past a player, and runs on to it. Instead it's a sideways or backwards ball.. I feel he needs to just let the handbrake off, and fucking go for it.

My biggest gripe is having no back up ready for Hamer. Surely if we know, they know, how important he was, and that it would be most likely he was moving on. Not replacing him is why we are struggling. I feel for the rest of the team as we are missing a proper engine, and that's not thier fault.

This is the key part, I thought it was pretty obvious we need a backup 'Hamer type' player even if Hamer stayed as the drop off when he was not playing was obvious. So to not even get one in was criminal. Anyone who thought/thinks Eccles and Sheaf is the answer in there is frankly mad. They are both fine players but ultimately perform the same role, they should be used in rotation with each other.

I'm also starting to have massive doubts about our AM options despite having a pile of them.

Brentford don’t sell every single player. It’s a low fee low risk signing but could turn out to be a solid player for us.

I like Sakamoto. He may or may not turn out to be a regular starter for us but he does bring something different to the team. At the very least a good option to have from the bench when you need to change things, although I think he may yet start a number of games.

The lack of creative playmaker is the huge gap we need to address.

Those writing players off - predominantly the front two - clearly miss that context. Striker’s performances are reliant on the service they receive, and so far this year we’ve lacked a decisive final ball and been asking Sheaf to play the ‘Hamer’ role.

For everyone else we’ve signed, appreciate the jury is still out for some, but a constant change in team selection, followed by tweaks, and now a wholesale change, to tactics isn’t exactly the environment to gain momentum, confidence or form.

Let’s wait and see how things play out.

And stop the constant negativity.

If you were present for the L1 relegation season, then this is a breeze. Yea we have money now, it just means stakes and expectations are higher - all other factors remain.

Given we have decent attacking statistics (in terms of xG) and our front three are all in the top 10 for big chances missed, I don't think you can let the strikers off quite so easily to be honest.

The XG table on the other thread surely shows we are creating plenty of chances and the strikers are underperforming?
