Because he offers a solution, rather than just more of the same shit.

He consistently asked voters "are you better off today than you were 4 years ago?"

And the answer was a resounding no.

So that was it, a very simple question, and a very simple campaign. Job done.

Of course time will tell if he will change things, but given its a 2 horse race, the outcome of the election shouldn't be a suprise to anyone. The press fooled everyone by saying its going to be a close call, but the bookies had Trump way ahead.
Well most are

Harris must have been utter shite to get thrashed like this, what a failure on their side. Now the current most powerful country in the world has a wannabe dictator running the show.

Just saw an interesting interview with some historian guy who argued that the reason people voted for him is they have sensed the dominant power of USA slipping, and Trump told everyone he’d keep them as the dominant force on planet Earth, the whole MAGA thing. Similar to how when we started losing the empire had a guy come along promising to keep us as top dogs by whatever means necessary & appealing to national pride we’d have probably lapped it up.

Whether there’s something in that I don’t know, but I just sense this is bad, bad news for the world. Don’t know much about Harris so maybe she’d have been a disaster, perhaps the message here is that the USA Empire (and is is one in all but name) is starting to unravel.

Harris and Walz offered solutions too. 4 years ago the US was still in the grip of a pandemic, economically it is now in much better shape.

He will run the country into the ground and make himself dictator.
We can't say he definitely will, because he so often comes out with complete bullshit.

It is entirely possible though.

She clearly isn't very smart herself, if she thinks that the majority of Americans are all thick, and that's why they voted for Trump.

If that WAS the case, then that's a massive indictment on the Government and the education system, and exactly why a change is needed.

There are people with degrees in tourism .. my dad who can't say weekend properly and struggles with basic math has a degree in counselling .. at some point even you have to accept that it's a pretty meaningless barometer
It’s not meaningless picking specific individual examples is irrelevant

You mean the rich?
The economy is in a much better place
Trump will destroy it much like brexit did ours so the rich will be ok but everyone else will be massively affected
USA a bit different though as they all dream if they work hard and get a bit of luck they’ll be in that Uber rich group

There are millions of people with degrees not worth a wank that are no more clever than the average worker .

Fact

These people fall into the " I voted for " category of the educated

What’s the point restating things to you? You think he’s above criticism
Not at all, but his message has clearly resonated with American voters who've overwhelmingly kicked Biden out in favour of Trump.

I think a large part of the problem is many people are so blinkered by their hatred of Trump the man, that they've lost all sence of Trump the politician.

Exit polls suggesting it was view on the economy that drive the result and not elites talking down to people. Dems been blamed for global inflation post Covid.

This is actually a well known phenomenon, not just in the states. People will make decisions based on their emotions if they are not able to reason, and they are easier to indoctrinate. Certain political entities do pick apart education to increase their chances of gaining/holding onto power.

Yes but overall there is still a correlation between level of education and vote.

oh they’ll be celebrating for sure. Also someone like Elon Musk arguably has more influence and power than a lot of entire countries, and he’s fully on board too- this, I feel, is going to be a dictatorship.

I may well get pounced on for saying this, but from a ‘humanistic’ point of view, I am genuinely saddened that someone who openly espouses the views, attitudes and behaviours that Trump does can be so wildly supported. It says a lot about the state of the world to be honest. I’m not gonna say people are thick for voting for him, but I’m lost as to how someone like that can be appealing. Unless, as the guy said on the interview, they went for the whole “USA as the only superpower” angle.

Biden hasn’t been kicked out strictly speaking, not that he’d have won either. Trump the man is a fascist. Trump the politician is also a fascist.

What??? Their economy is shit, their national debt is now unserviceable, and the general public are up in arms about inflation and rising prices in the shops.

They didn't vote for change because everything is wonderful.

The only good thing that comes out of this is that at least Democrats will concede without violence.

That was by no means a given if it went the other way, as we saw the last time, and as Trump had clearly primed the nutters for this time. That's not an echo chamber view, btw, unless you're living in denial of the facts.

The big winners here are the authoritarian strong men; Putin, Kim, Netanyahu, and the like, and the losers are the people who suffer as the result of their policies.

It's not likely to be great for the planet either, I'm afraid. Coal, oil, fracking, and climate change denial are all back with a bang now.

Part of me is beyond caring. I worry for my kids and their future, but I'll be gone before the worst of it, should it come to that.

The best solution is probably to stop worrying about it, ignore the science and the news, and just take the "Who gives a fuck about anyone else", line. It seems to be how it works in general these days.

What's his solution?

This all sounds a bit final solution
Trump has campaigned on vastly expanding the authority of the executive branch over the federal government.[18] This would be accomplished through the imposition of a spoils system via Schedule F,[19][20] and directing the U.S. Department of Justice to go after domestic political enemies.[21] Other campaign issues include: implementing anti-immigrant policies and a massive deportation operation against legal[22][23] and illegal immigrants;[24] pursuing an isolationist "America First" foreign policy agenda;[25][26] repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act;[27][28] pursuing a climate change denial and anti-clean energy platform;[29][30][31] terminating the Department of Education;[30] implementing anti-LGBT policies;[32][33][30] and pursuing what has been described as a neomercantilist trade agenda

Looking at America today, it needs drastic action.

The one thing they simply can not have " is more of the same"

They need a complete clear out of the old political elites, and a new way forward.

I've no idea if Trump is the answer, but it sure as he'll wasn't going to be Harris.

You can all argue whether voters or the general public are thick, racist, arrogant or ignorant, rich or poor it matters not. You can look at certain demographics of how people voted and history and trends, but once again people are surprised at an outcome, just as they were with Boris, with Brexit, with Trump the first time and even how close he got in 2020.

Quite simply (imo), a lot of people say one thing and do another, but also and fundamentally, don't like being told what to do. It's inherent in all of us, the little kid who you say 'dont touch that it's hot' etc we are wired to find out for ourselves.

I've also noted how a few of you are talking about your own social groups as representative. Guess what? They're not. We do tend to align ourselves with like people (Coventry City fans on SBT). If I take my own friendship group as an example it's not at all representative of views on this board (in fact most aren't City fans either!). Certainly above average IQ level, decent mix of Education levels, mostly Tory, mostly Brexit, none have ever been contacted to ask how they will vote on any election nor were they on Brexit.

It's a strong assumption that people don't vote a particular way unless everyone is asked, there are waves of silent voters who come out on both sides when they feel engaged or outraged or need a voice. Those who tend to believe they are 'right-on' with politics as an example on this board, tend to be the loudest and push their agenda, to the point that they ridicule and join inevitable pile-ons and silence views they disagree with collectively, then are surprised when things don't go as expected. Then comes the name-calling and blame game, rinse and repeat.

Perhaps we need to look a little closer to home for the reasons and engage in softer debate, try to understand why someone thinks or acts like they do, particularly in so many grey subjects where there is so much opinionated bile from those who are experts on just about everything under the sun, and then perhaps things might change for the better.
