This would be great news but I just can’t see Putin backing down unless he can take a ‘win’ back to Russia. Maybe there is something Ukraine are willing to offer so Putin can save face
Would be a big U-turn from his talks with Macron and Scholz. But can't see him stopping without getting something he can sell to the world ( not just Russian public) as a win

If he gets Donestk, Luhansk and Crimea recognised as Russian will that be enough?

The war is going badly with huge losses, the economy is fucked, the rest of the world won't trade with them. Might be a case of get out while you can and let's be honest no matter how little they gain, they'll be able to sell it as a win to the domestic audience.

There is zero chance - he will rather obliterate Ukraine - there is zero chance of Russia climbing down

well the world are trading with them - billion dollars a day from the eu alone abs China certainly will continue trade you also do wonder if some Cold War isolation and alm that goes with it is something Mr Putin rather longs for

I agree, unfortunately. It’s not like they’ve shown they can be trusted, have they?

ironically I think at the beginning the annexation of the east of Ukraine into Russian hands would probably have been acceptable

Crimea itself has been such a problem area for centuries

I can’t see Ukraine agreeing it anyway and now how would it ever work they’d always by the threat of Russia moving back into those terrorise that would remain with Ukraine - Russia would insist on “peace keeping” forces policing the capital to protect Russian citizens

Time Magazine has paid tribute to the American journalist and filmmaker Brent Renaud, who was killed earlier by gunfire in the Ukrainian town of Irpin.

Renaud, 50, was in Ukraine working on a Time Studios project focused on refugees, the company confirmed on Sunday.

In a statement Time editor-in-chief and CEO Edward Felsenthal and Ian Orefice, the president and chief operating officer of Time and Time Studios, said they were "devastated by the loss".

"As an award-winning filmmaker and journalist, Brent tackled the toughest stories around the world often alongside his brother Craig Renaud," the statement said. "Our hearts are with all of Brent’s loved ones."

Felsenthal and Orefice added that it is "essential that journalists are able to safely cover this ongoing invasion and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine".

Earlier on Sunday US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan accused Russia of "targeting journalists" and said the US would impose "appropriate consequences".

Really not good

Think I need to reevaluate my life as I’m over 50 and I’m thinking what have I done

The only audience that matters to Putin is the 140m Russian citizens and the vast majority of them support what he’s doing because they only hear the state propaganda. So by that measure the war isn’t going badly, it’s going well and Mother Russia will prevail…and every new sanction and western weapon sent to Ukraine is more proof that the west are the enemy and justification of the invasion..

‘The rest of the world won’t trade with them’…simply wrong. EU countries continue to throw billions into the Russian coffers every week for energy at ever increasing prices, China continue to buy gas and oil, India signed a massive trade deal in December for gas, oil, wheat and more and Imran Khan openly met with Putin a few days ago to do exactly the same for Pakistan even against the backdrop of the invasion.

EU and US are cutting down on Russian oil and gas. India and Pakistan aren't going to make up for the rest of the world are they? Not even close. Yeah they can keep exporting oil and wheat to China, India and Pakistan. But what about all the machinery, parts, supplies, materials, they need. Ships and planes won't land/dock, they're out of SWIFT.

You grossly underestimate the number of, and effect of, all the sanctions and all the companies that are withdrawing.

I have no idea I just know it's super close to Poland and seen something about it being a NATO base but t no actually sure how true it is or not, I guess time will tell.

Not a NATO base mate, 5 miles from Poland and within Ukraine.

Apparently used for training and storage, I'd guess it's where some of the munitions that are crossing the border are received.

I think if Putin hit anywhere within Poland then NATO would be duty bound to retaliate. Of course, Putin would try to muddy the water by claiming it was a Ukrainian false flag operation or something...

you underestimate the fact Mr Putin cares not a jot About the impact of sanctions on the Russian people

When exactly are the EU reducing dependency? Next week next year or next century?

I never said he did. Doesn't alter the fact that India and Pakistan aren't going to replace the US, EU and the rest of the world in trade.

which then is totally irrelevant especially as the eu continue to pump billions a week into tbe war effort and it increases every week as well

Well, whatever, that's irrelevant too. There is nothing false about my original statement: 'The war is going badly with huge losses, the economy is fucked, the rest of the world won't trade with them'

India/Pakistan and not caring about sanctions on Russian people is irrelevant to the statement above.

What can you say really?

There are towns and villages that have not been contactable for a week or longer. The paucity of video evidence, I'm sure, means there are so many atrocities that we have not heard about because there's nobody left to tell the story.

That annexation may have been acceptable to Putin (and Putin alone) for five minutes. Then, emboldened by that win he pushes his agents further in and does the same again. And again. And again. Until someone stops him.

The fact that you think he'd just accept that and stop is just mind-blowingly naive. The same was said when he took Crimea. Instead he just increased operations in Luhansk and Donetsk. Genuinely, look at Hitler and see just how similar the gameplans are. Then see when Hitler decided to stop pushing for more. CLUE: He didn't.

You really are utterly clueless. Hitler abs Putin comparisons are moronic

Ignore the weirdo. Let him pretend to his handful of halfwits
You're the ultimate pretender, be it
black, Catholic, Muslim , Russian Orthodox or a one legged, gender fluid, shrew.
How's the resistance fighting going ?

Save face isn't something he understands. I wouldn't be surprised if he bombs refugee camps just over the border into Poland. He's immune to basic human sense of empathy and compassion. A total bastard .

Great post. Hope it’s correct, if so, Russia’s ability to fight and take control of cities will continue to reduce. unfortunately that might lead to more indiscriminate bombing in the short term. Longer term they’ll be struggling

Would you let Putin take any non NATO country without resistance?

He has not got the resource. The notion he's going to be marching through Eastern Europe with some kind of Hitler type of domination is just never happening - he also knows there would be a limit China would tolerate - the West have made it clear what it will take to have a military response and Ukraine is not it

The Russians cannot win a battle fighting hand to hand on the streets of kiyv. History shows that massive bombardment is the tactic that is used initially to try and wear down the resistance and break the opposition but, ultimately, they will have to fight street by street, block by block. That's where the battle is ultimately won or lost.

According to US intelligence Russia has approached China for military aid. Could be a measure of how Russia is struggling, could be an attempt by Russia to drag China into it, could be both.

Im asking what your line would be. Am I right in reading your position that as Ukraine isn’t NATO we shouldn’t get involved?

Although Grendel won't believe it, sounds very reminiscent of Germany approaching Russia WWII. I don't think at this stage Putin would be crazy enough to make them an enemy if he was rebuffed but given how completely mad his actions over the past few months have become it's a niggling doubt.

I'm really starting to believe that Putin has had some massive event happen to him recently to affect his thinking. He always seemed quite patient but he just seems to be going all-out all of a sudden. Maybe it's to do with how much he has cut himself off recently due to Covid removing any semblance of dissent or the pandemic has put his own mortality and how long he might have left to achieve his aims into his mind , but I am really wondering if he's found out, or at least suspects, that he is seriously or terminally ill.

It's a relationship of mutual convenience rather than some great friendship.
As long as China's eyes on being the dominant influence in Asia they'll co-exist.
Could easily come a stage when China gets so powerful Russia will get paranoid about them and the huge border they share.
