So I guess things like the tea and cotton industries should look to bring back slavery then?

Again exactly the absurd mindset labour has and why you’ll forever be second in a two horse race

What the fuck are you talking about? You said as business should look to it's best performance as a means to recover not airbrush them from history.

The tea and cotton industries were most profitable at the time it used slave labour. But they kind of keep quiet about that and airbrush it out don't they.

And I'm not labour.

You are trying to be smart and bring up a heinous example and compare that to labour trying to forget Blair and Brown existed

If slavery was introduced again said businesses would be shut down. If Tony Blair and Brown from their hey days were in charge they’d have flattened Johnson in the last election

It’s a dumb comparison

They tend to lower taxes mostly for the already well off or big business. Like the Republicans in the US when they speak of tax cuts generally it’s not tax cuts for Joe Bloggs. They can’t run on what they actually believe as nobody would vote for it so they have to use rhetorical tricks to get people to vote against their own self interest. They want socialism for the rich and rugged individualism for everyone else.

People need reminding that we already get a lot of ‘free stuff’ in the form of schooling up to the age of 18, healthcare for life, rubbish collection, fire and rescue, policing and a social safety net. These things weren’t always a given and if those with small c conservative views always had their way we wouldn’t have them or if we did it would be the American version at best. The challenge for social democrats is to frame the narrative and dictate it so that this way of thinking is normal and being a Thatcher child is seen as odd.
No need to give me a lecture about something obvious.

I was asked why I think so many people vote Tory. I replied tax cuts. They don't normally go into a GE promising tax going up to pay for what we need. They just say what people want to hear.

If the landlords didn't buy them as a business investment (thus giving them greater access to finance) pushing the prices up, properties would be more affordable and those that can't buy would be able to.

Yes, some people would choose to rent, possibly due to not having an intention to stay somewhere long and the hassle of going through buying property that you'd be looking to sell very soon anyway is more of an inconvenience. But there are loads of people who would love to buy and can't.
What about those who don't/can't work? Do they not come I to the equation? Without private landlords many would be homeless.

We need more homes not less landlords.

They didn’t promise tax cuts did they?

Why do people even give that weirdo the time of day?

He's been shown to be an idiot who has no grasp of anything he talks about

No I’m saying the labour strategy is wrong. You see it on here - the membership are trying to force concepts down the wider publics throat and then blame everyone else for when it all falls over - it’s laughable

It was the easiest campaign for the Tories to win

This you are right on - the membership push for a PV was a deeply stupid move.

They have gone into multiple GEs pledging not to pay people properly and to maintain real terms funding cuts. How is that a vote winner?

They didn't have to offer anything other than get Brexit done. The last time they offered a referendum if they got in. And we all know how that ended.

David with people like you on the opposite end of the political spectrum life for the Tories is so so easy.

I will try again.

Tax going up rarely mentioned. Tax reductions shouted from the rooftops. People don't like their wages being taken up with tax. Say something that looks like more tax will have to be raised and you lose votes.

As I said several times before more people think of their own situation more than that of others. Why is this so hard to understand?

Sorry but I didn't have a middle class uni education like you
Nor did I have a middle class uni education - but it's not difficult to understand the difference between 'their' and 'there' or 'you're and 'your'.

Has this been posted yet? Johnson in February pretty clearly stating the plan is to not lockdown and make profit when other countries are. Any of the “following the science” people want to take a crack at defending this?

At some point when it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, you’ve got to drop the hypothesis that maybe it’s a particularly well disguised chicken.

Care England saying up to 7500 deaths in care homes could be related to covid-19.

7500 people dead because the fucking tory party abandoned them.

Never forget never forgive

I'm not a part of that generation. My kids certainly are not.

Brexit? It has shafted me more than most. But you have to take it on the chin.

Jobs for life mainly disappeared many years ago. They went with manufacturing. But think about it. They had the thought of jobs for life but it didn't end that way.

All my older kids but one own their own home. I struggled for years. The so called boomers didn't have it easy like many seem to make out. Labour disaster in the 70's. I just about remember it as a kid. Mortgage interest rates of 15% or more. Grew up on the select council estates in Coventry.

But yes they have ended up with homes worth much more than they paid. This money will eventually be left to ther younger relatives. They don't see the benefit in them. Yes they had better pensions. We have Gordon Brown to thank for decimating final salary pensions.

I can't wait to leave the rat race. 2 years 362 days to go. We will have the equivalent of only one minimum wage coming in until we reach state pension age. But because we have never done luxuries we will be OK. Spend about 60k buying a house that needs a total renovation. Spend about a year doing it up. Then put my feet up. We will have fruit trees and grow vegetables. I will have my river bank to fish from with a man cave next to me. Wife drinks wine at about a quid a bottle. Quite nice too. My tinnies are also cheap. Invest in a Tesla when the older ones get cheaper. Look at generating my own power to charge it. Then I will have very cheap motoring.

My aims in life are low. Our carbon footprint will be low. But no more getting up at silly o'clock in the morning. No more staying up all night or working weekends and missing the football. £12 flights to Midlands airport for games. I will be able to grow old and die in peace.
What’s the nearest airport, Limoges?

All of this talk of work, we all know that the British are amongst some of the most idle in the world and prefer a lie in to hard work.

I think it’s got a lot to do with a good few generations having it as an option because of freedom of movement and people willing to come here with a different work ethic to take up the slack.

Nah it’s just down to being among the worst idlers in the world, working low hours and early retirement.

Fuuuuuuck me. This thread about the “ventilator challenge” is absolutely damning.

Key point:

Shouldn’t be surprised that Brexit fanboys have so little regard for knowledge and expertise, but still the fact that even in a pandemic they buy their own bullshit is downright scary.

These people shouldn’t be anywhere near government. Corbyn and co were dumb as rocks but as least respected those that weren’t. This is frankly dangerous.

I agree we need more homes. Not that we need more landlords.

If you can't/won't work that is what socially provided housing should be for. Private landlords tend to steer clear of the examples you give if at all possible,
