USA also hopefuls of a vaccine by January according to Fauci
Didn’t he say by September originally, then before winter sets in? It’s fingers crossed thinking. It’s possible of course but the key word is possible and he’s already changed that possibility at least twice. The latest two possibilities actually only being days apart.

Perhaps if I knew what they were I'd understand what the actual issue is
Here is a link

Why are coronavirus tests so difficult to produce?

Here is a paragraph from the link

Making matters more complicated, many countries, including the UK and the US, have had problems getting enough supplies for testing. It’s not so much a matter of lacking the raw materials but making sure they are pure and mixed in the right amounts. Each brand of test has their own unique blend of about 20 chemicals. Each set requires its own unique packaging. Roche reagents don’t fit a Cepheid any better than a Chevy truck part fits a Prius. Making test kits is as burdensome as drug-making.

They're certainly not pointless otherwise by that logic the NHS workers might as well just care for patients in the nude and save everyone the trouble.

But they're only as useful as the person who wears them. Social distancing still needs to be actioned whilst wearing masks otherwise their usefulness lessens and as such the risk rises.

This is where I completely agree with scientists and medical practitioners who fear that masks may give off a false sense of security to people.
The confusion over all this is a major problem

That WHO video, to me, seems a bit contradictory.
She says the masks she demonstrates (fluid resistant surgical mask) won't really protect you alone. She said you need to take other precautions.
She said wear one if you've got symptoms (obs to protect others).
But if you're in a room with someone who's got the bug, you should put one on.
Why? She's just said alone they won't protect you.

Am I missing something?

I see a lot of people out and about with masks and that makes me think they've got the bug, so they should be at home self-isolating. However, they could have it but have no symptoms, so they're being nice and trying to protect others, just in case.

Just think the official messages need to be crystal clear and that WHO video doesn't do it for me.

The WHO has to advise in an environment where some countries have limited PPE supplies and don’t want panic buying.
So they would prefer people to die than cause panic buying?

I have to wear one as a part of my job. You start to sweat underneath one. It becomes uncomfortable. If you wear glasses they steam up. You touch them to move them.

So let's say you have the virus. You touch the mask. You then have the virus on your hands. Everything you then touch can become contaminated. The next person to touch the same item can become contaminated. And so on.

It works well in countries where they are used to wearing them. But the argument is they are counter productive where people are not used to wearing them.

There is good and bad about wearing them. They could halt the spread but could also accelerate the spread.

2 days ago Sturgeon advocated masks and got shot down by some Tory.
Yesterday Boris said they'd be a useful tool when coming out of lock down!

Nome are saying it’s mandatory

Is there any point in doing it if not?
Be interesting to see how effective they've been in countries where they are mandatory but even if the numbers are good how do you know how much is down to them and how much is down to other measures?
I'd be happy to wear one if they were mandatory post lock down even if the evidence of their effectiveness old sketchy

Where has it actually been mandatory in all areas in Europe?

This is the problem Clint. Everybody needs to be singing from the same hymn sheet.
I tend not to listen to politicos saying the opposite of each other, but I would expect people like the WHO to be independent and give the correct advice. Their advice isn't clear cut to me.

Slovakia,Czech Republic, Austria and I think Turkey though I'd have to check.
Edit - just checked and Turkey is mandatory though I think it may only apply in shops, markets etc not parks.

Er so none then
None what? This is where you make up your own story to make a point that doesn't exist.

They are mandatory in countries that are used to wearing them. So where in Europe are people used to wearing them?

Ones doing better than us and most started doing it in March or early April. Aside from helping control the number of cases and therefore deaths it’s also meant that they’ve been able to relax lockdown measures sooner.

Here’s the list

Which countries have made wearing face masks compulsory?

The Italy response shows the concerns especially the false sense of security and potential resource impacts

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.th...here-should-you-wear-a-face-mask-in-italy/amp

I get the false sense of security concerns.
I'm also not convinced of how effective they are but I would still be happy to wear one if made mandatory. Anything that can help even if it's minimal is worth a go.

Even if you could guarantee their ‘independence’ people like Trump and Johnson won’t listen because it doesn’t fit their own narrative - wherever that influence comes from.

That's why IMO it should be enforced. Germany have bought in punishments for not wearing face masks (apparently up to €10,000) if you are caught without a mask on in public.

Our government need to find a backbone and implement similar laws / punishments with regards to wearing face masks otherwise people simply won't wear them consistently enough.

They'll flount the rules as they are doing now with quarantine.
Not actually true, face masks are only compulsory on public transport, certain shops and other places you can't social distance.

They are not mandatory for wearing in public

Not all public places as you were implying so no you were wrong.

You will not be fined 10k for not wearing a mask on public.

Oh of course because public transport and publicly accessible shops don't technically count as going out in public. Thanks for clearing that up.

What an idiot. How much notice was there schools were closing, couple of days? Is he seriously suggesting that in that time they should have been able to transfer everything online?

We've got a parliament that couldn't sort out a Withdrawal Agreement for three years and they expect teachers to completely revolutionise their method of teaching (often without having the technical knowledge of how to do it) in a few days. Whilst also continuing to have to do the traditional method for key workers.

You said you could be funded 10k for going g out in public without a mask. You can go out in public without a mask but if you wish to do certain things you have to put a mask on.

Keep digging

I agree on the economy bit though some experts think it will be a piece of piss and we can lockdown for 6 years if we have to

What this has shown is that the way we structure economics it cannot adapt to change. This makes it a very vulnerable system and we need to take a massive look at this. The first step is to get rid of the utter obsession with economic growth.

Amazing how following the changing science which the government has done all along seems in vogue today

Seems the government approach of following the changing science is gaining support

But at no point did the science say herd mentality was a good idea - that was an ideological idea that was tried to be pushed on them to agree to. We lost a lot of time for that.

Neither have they ever said PPE was useless. Again that was political spin because we'd not stockpiled enough even though we'd been told to years before. So again a political failing that they've tried to push onto health professionals.
