Ending restrictions while infections are still high is fucking stupid and yes it was clear Witty and Vallance agree it is fucking stupid.
They could’ve resigned if they thought it was that bad an idea ?! I honestly think they have brought into the main parts of the plan but obviously want people to remain vigilant and stay at home if they’re ill, ensure ONS sample testing continued and that testing could be ramped back up again if necessary
If those things have been secured I agree with most of the actions but not the end of SSP….although not sure how people will know if they’ve got covid if there’s no testing ?! Should’ve probably phased that out later even though you’d hope most employers will support employees anyway
There’s been plenty of people talking about the waste of money track, test and trace has been. I read it cost £2bn last month. Yet same people are now complaining about winding this down ?!
We’re ultimately removing not staying at home as a criminal act which is correct if it’s less dangerous for nearly everyone. LFTs (for what they’re worth) are still available for elderly, care settings etc and I read maybe £20 per box for everyone else. ONS surveillance is continuing.
Without coming out and stating it, I’d imagine the underlying strategy will be same as last summer ie let it circulate a bit more when immunity from severe illness is high and nhs is under less pressure. If you do this and everyone’s staying it home for a week when they’re not even ill it wouldn’t make sense. Only time will tell if it’s the correct strategy, last summers call to end restrictions, against massive opposition, was proven to be ok in the end and probably even helped us over the winter months
Edit - I’ll reserve right to alter view if numbers/hospitalisations are high end of next month when reduction in most measures start to kick in !
