I thought they were going back to normal after yesterdays game, didn’t we get about 3 minutes?

If the Saudis can get an equaliser they'll win it I think, but the poles have created the best chances on the break

FIFA I used to shrug my shoulders about, but they have actually managed to get under my skin. Two phrases come to mind ' absolute power corrupts absolutely' and 'money being the root of all evil' has never been more apt about an organisation.
The awarding of tournaments to Russia and Qatar, the only bids which were flagged for concern by FIFA's own inspectors, said all one needed to know. Meanwhile Saudi Arabia is looking at a joint bid for 2030 with Egypt and Greece. More dirty money to have its say presumably.

It would need to be. Anything to avoid giving it to a 'traditional' European host I suppose. Doubt England will host it in my Lifetime

Me too, it galls me that others have been allowed to host it more than once but I get the feeling we could offer more money and back handers and still be overlooked

They're shameless. An actual openly corrupt organisation that even those that don't like football can see, and absolutely nothing is (or can be?) done about it

Probably mentioned elsewhere on here but Netflix doc about FIFA is worth a watch. Disgraceful.

For want of a better word, but England/Spain/France/Germany/Italy etc.
Germany hosted one four tournaments ago! And France two tournaments before that. How often do you think these countries should be holding World Cups, and what makes them so special in your eyes?

I thought Australia deserved the bid that Qatar bought, so it's not some pro European bias. But we're looking at over 60 years since England last hosted it, when the USA, Mexico and Germany all had it twice in that time.

Doesn't seem right

Between them, the five “traditional” countries you listed (all largely white, European, Christian countries….hmm) hosted the World Cup every eight years from 1966 onwards. I’m not saying give it to any old despot, but why shouldn’t someone else get a go? (I’m sure they had a great bid, but not sure Australia is the diversity we’re looking for here)

This is a bit of a weird rabbit hole to go down...

I didn’t bring it up!
Well not that but some hinting at it being racist to suggest the tournament go back to Western Europe for the first time in at least 24 years. Australia would be a new continent for the tournament to go to, some footballing pedigree already, a growing commercial market for the game, infrastructure already in place, no despotic regime etc.

Or are you suggesting Qatar got it on merit?

I’m saying that Western Europe has no divine right to host the World Cup, especially considering how regularly they did so throughout the 20th century. And I’m saying that it’s a good thing that tournaments are held in countries of different races, faiths, and economic situations, so long as it’s safe for all fans to attend and economically sustainable to host.

None of which is to say that Qatar or Russia were worthy hosts - they clearly weren’t. But saying we should just go back to rotating between the same old five or six wealthy countries doesn’t advance the game’s global interests either.
