I'm not suggesting going back to the alternating between Europe and South America. But for England not to have hosted in going on 64 years and western Europe in 24 seems a bit excessive. It seems that England in particular are just simply never going to host again.I’m saying that Western Europe has no divine right to host the World Cup, especially considering how regularly they did so throughout the 20th century. And I’m saying that it’s a good thing that tournaments are held in countries of different races, faiths, and economic situations, so long as it’s safe for all fans to attend and economically sustainable to host.
None of which is to say that Qatar or Russia were worthy hosts - they clearly weren’t. But saying we should just go back to rotating between the same old five or six wealthy countries doesn’t advance the game’s global interests either.
Got a lunatic in charge tooTurkey would have been a better choice as a Muslim country to host the tournament
Still would have had One Love issues though I fear
You suggested there was a conspiracy against “traditional” countries hosting the tournament, and when asked what you meant, listed five countries who’ve collectively already hosted one third of all World Cup tournaments in history! Why do they deserve even more bites out of the cherry above the other 190 countries in the world?I'm not suggesting going back to the alternating between Europe and South America. Well there was proven corruption in the awarding of the last 2. Not even a conspiracy is it? Is Australia too ‘white’ to get the tournament? What an odd argument. You suggested there was a conspiracy against “traditional” countries hosting the tournament, and when asked what you meant, listed five countries who’ve collectively already hosted one third of all World Cup tournaments in history! Moan all you like about England not hosting enough World Cups - I think it’s time to start asking when regions like west Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Australasia are going to get a proper shake at hosting. It’s not always going to be straightforward, but it’s time the World Cup properly reflected the diversity of its fanbase.
Fuck that it’s full of Islamic extremism, more likely to have a terror attacking there.Turkey would have been a better choice as a Muslim country to host the tournament

Last time I checked Australia was in Australasia, but anyway - my argument was (broadly speaking) that it’s maybe time to let the global south have some more shots at hosting the tournament if they can. I can obviously understand why someone would disagree, even if I don’t share their view.Well there was proven corruption in the awarding of the last 2. Not even a conspiracy is it? Wait til you hear who’s hosting the next World Cup!Fuck that it’s full of Islamic extremism, more likely to have a terror attacking there.
Tournaments are better when the host country has a legitimate chance of winning it.You suggested there was a conspiracy against “traditional” countries hosting the tournament, and when asked what you meant, listed five countries who’ve collectively already hosted one third of all World Cup tournaments in history! You suggested Australia wasn’t diverse enough, but ok.Last time I checked Australia was in Australasia, but anyway - my argument was (broadly speaking) that it’s maybe time to let the global south have some more shots at hosting the tournament if they can. Hmm not sure really - the Russia World Cup was a cracker (on the pitch). South Africa, Japan/SK and USA all good too.Tournaments are better when the host country has a legitimate chance of winning it.
Playing it here there and everywhere is boring.
As an antidote to regular rotation between England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France then no, they’re probably not! Football doesn’t just belong to the G20 elites, that’s my point. You suggested Australia wasn’t diverse enough, but ok.
I think traditional is the right word, all of the countries you list are traditional footballing nations, I don't mind the world cup going to other parts of the world where the game is developing, but I don't think it should be at the complete exclusion of the games traditional base. For want of a better word, but England/Spain/France/Germany/Italy etc.
Being a cracker on the pitch doesn’t excuse giving it to a country that we’re engaged in a war inside the borders of another sovereign nation.Hmm not sure really - the Russia World Cup was a cracker (on the pitch). South Africa, Japan/SK and USA all good too.
No needNo var for that goal?
No? Looked really closeNo need
When can England next expect to host? Some time this century perhaps? As an antidote to regular rotation between England, Germany, Italy, Spain and France then no, they’re probably not! Football doesn’t just belong to the G20 elites, that’s my point.
(But as I went onto say, it would nevertheless be good for Australasia to host someday)
Was played on by the defender, close but clearly on.No? Looked really close
Well it’s coming back to the USA, didn’t 1994 do the trick?Nothing wrong with established footballing nations getting regular world cups.
And there's an absolute host of other "traditional" footballing nations who have never held a world cup who should be way in front of the queue of joke bids like Qatar and Saudi Arabia (most of north Africa for a start).
Just give it to the country best placed to hold it... if thats the same 5 or 6 nations then so be it.... its utter bollocks that spreading the world cup around expands the game anyway.
With Mexico, their 3rd go at itWell it’s coming back to the USA, didn’t 1994 do the trick?
Mexico involved in that bid too so that’s 3 times they’ve had it now.Well it’s coming back to the USA, didn’t 1994 do the trick?
Anyone’s guess, but given the dwindling number of countries who are even capable of hosting a World Cup these days you’d have to say it was more likely than not within the next 20/30 years? Assuming we still want to bother, of course. When can England next expect to host? Some time this century perhaps?
If we’re to think of other good contenders outside the established countries, where else in Asia would you consider besides Japan and South Korea? Only China perhaps, but weak footballing side with massive human rights issues. North Africa and Australia to me seem the best ‘new’ places for it to go.Anyone’s guess, but given the dwindling number of countries who are even capable of hosting a World Cup these days you’d have to say it was more likely than not within the next 20/30 years? Given that we held the Euros in 1996, will almost certainly do so again in 2028, and held the Euros final in 2020 and the Olympics in 2012, I’m honestly surprised there are people in this country who think we’re getting a really raw deal in terms of hosting major global sporting events - and that’s even after taking the 2006/2018 shenanigans into account.
Good point well made, but good luck to anybody having to get a train from Manchester to London with our transportation in its current state.I think a good bases to start with ‘are a country capable of hosting the World Cup’ should be - do they have the infrastructure in place without having to spend billions.
If they don’t have the necessary stadia and transportation then they need to develop them and thus show they are sustainable before it is awarded.
974One of the stadiums is being taken down and used in the next World Cup - I can’t remember where - Qatar only has 6 football teams so one each
Another winter world cup ?
As I said, it’s not straightforward, the politics can change quickly, and there are very few Goldilocks options - I’m sure you could find arguments to disqualify most countries. But off the top of my head - Turkey, Indonesia or even India could be possibles (doubt it would fly while Modi is still PM). I would be surprised if the UAE doesn’t host the tournament in the future, and if it continues to liberalise then I wouldn’t have a huge problem with that. Then you can have regional tournaments where someone like Japan or SK brings in smaller countries like Thailand, Vietnam etc if the stars align. If we’re to think of other good contenders outside the established countries, where else in Asia would you consider besides Japan and South Korea? Only China perhaps, but weak footballing side with massive human rights issues. North Africa and Australia to me seem the best ‘new’ places for it to go.
But we’re giving it back to America and Mexico…
