Are there many differences to here?

I think we are a few steps ahead of the UK, which is why it has been pretty easy to predict what will unravel in the UK.

Everything here closes at 5pm now, so restaurants and bars are effectively useless. The whole of Amsterdam is like a ghost town. There is even a light festival at the moment which is amazing, but due to the closing times, the tours take place in daylight which makes it all a bit of a joke really.

Outdoor activities should still be allowed. Bet they’re busy bleaching ‘touch points’ over there too.

Though tbf they took a long time to start the booster programme (19th Nov for over 80s only) whereas in the UK started ours on 30th September. I don't know if it's a false assumption but guess that there is a fair bit of travel between NL and SA given its colonial link?

The booster is not being well received here at all. You are also correct about the SA link.

It doesn't actually say that they have gone to hospital because of Omicron though.

That's the stat they should be announcing. Have all 10 gone in with severe breathing difficulties because of it or something unrelated but tested positive for it?
It's inevitable that there are going to be hospitalisations and deaths due to it though.

Yep, and I worry that people who try to play it down are either being selfish or deliberately missing the point.

The problem is that some people don't seem to see that that even very small proportions of very big numbers, are in themselves pretty big numbers.

Even if Omicron is less deadly than other variants, it's replicating far faster. Every indication is that there will be millions infected in a fairly short space of time.

Even if a small proportion of those need hospital treatment, that will be tens of thousands of extra admissions.

The NHS, for anyone who hasn't noticed, is already on its knees.

People are waiting hours for ambulances, and then even longer in ambulances outside hospitals to be admitted.

Anything any of us can do to reduce this pressure, is has to be sensible. By definition, no one plans to need an emergency ambulance, it could happen to any of us or our families.

And all of the evidence suggests that taking simple precautions now (wearing masks, social distancing where possible, vaccination and boosters), will mean less drastic steps later. And lives saved of course, from Covid itself and the myriad other medical emergencies that people can suffer from.

To me this is so incontrovertible and relatively trivial as to need no great discussion.

Why people need to make stuff up or try to find edge-case justifications for not taking reasonable precautions is completely beyond me. Is it stupidity, or is it selfishness, I'm really not quite sure...

Shock, goalposts moved for the COVID Pass.

Shock, some random numbers thrown about to scare people in the press.

Have they said when they will get more tests to send out?

Convenient it happens just as they move the goalposts

Took me literally all day to get through on the website, but UHCW have plenty of booster appointments available, even from as soon as tomorrow.

Got mine booked for Thurs

I might be reading it wrong but isn't that a peak after two doses but with waning immunity drops to 36.1% for AZ and 46.7% for Pfizer.

Yes you read correct, but i read it as symptomatic infection.

Being double jabbed trains your immune system enough to not be too ill that you're hospitalised or severely ill

Maybe we can test people who die with an STD to get people to force people to use condoms?

Of course it's scare mongering. It is straight up misinformation.

No, but letting people know in no uncertain terms that people were dying in large numbers of HIV probably encouraged safer sex and saved a lot of lives.

Maybe you'd define it as scaremongering, I'd say it was a fairly sensible public health approach. It probably sold a few more papers, maybe some people even got rich off of it somehow, but that didn't invalidate the message.

And of course, many (if not most) people with AIDS died of things like pneumonia or related infections. Maybe you'd define that as 'with AIDS' instead of 'of AIDS'. But I'd say 'of AIDS' because that was clearly what led to their deaths.

Frankly mate, I think you're going a bit bananas here. This obsession with the word 'with' instead of 'of', and the desperation that you seem to have to deny that Covid/Omicron is likely to cause issues seems strange. I'm trying to work out where you're going with it all.

So, here's a straight question or two:

What makes you believe that this is all bullshit, that Omicron doesn't represent a threat that merits a response?

Does it upset you having to be vaccinated, boosted, or wear a mask?

So went 5 aside tonight and was blowing after 2 minutes. Just couldn't get going all night.

My mate said I bet that's that booster, I'm agreeing with him but my moneys on the fucking massive Chinese take away I had about two hours before kick off.

I'm playing tomorrow night and I had my booster last week. I just know that it's going to make me continually shin stuff over the bar, misplace easy passes, and stop me tracking back. Feckin' booster.

Javid says there are 200k people getting infected by Omicron in this country every day?

That can't be right
