Is anywhere outside of China or Iran (who we don’t believe) at that point yet?
Denmark have started sending some kids back to school I believe.

Also, someone (Tisza?) mentioned that Poland was loosening but I haven't heard of anything like this from any of my clients over there.

Was speaking to a UK based Polish girl at work today. She said that they were
still locked down .

Regarding the testing of residents/patients returning to care homes, I think some of the comments, about what is ultimately an additional precautionary measure, such as facilitated manslaughter, murder etc etc are way over the top

presumably this is only able to happen now due to the limited testing capacity and the previous focus on testing those admitted to hospital for showing symptoms and then the nhs workers and their families (if they have been self isolating). Correct in my view

As far as I’m aware coronavirus patients are kept in separate units away from general wards so you would hope that IF procedures had been followed (and PPE available etc) the transferred individuals wouldn’t have a significantly higher chance of being infected (and be asymptomatic as presuming if they are showing symptoms they won’t be moved into the care home in the first place) than say a worker or anyone else coming into the care home from the outside world that day ? - we aren’t expecting all of those individuals to be tested daily

Again, Im not saying the inability to test higher numbers before now isn’t a major issue, but some of the comments on here are a step too far

Ps I was actually feeling a little more positive after seeing the case numbers today, probably should’ve stuck to avoiding this thread !

Just reading up on it, seems they locked down 12 days before us and tighter. Sending back kids under 11 now.

Few other places like Austria and Czech Republic too. Reading about Sweden and it’s a little misleading to say they haven’t locked down IMO, apparently they have a work from home culture already and over half are doing that, while travel networks are down 50%, plus they’re sensible in terms of health and washing hands and stuff, so they’ve done a lot of the same stuff without having to be told.

I had a brief conversation with a mate earlier whose missus is Slovakian.
He said they introduced very few measures but they closed their borders and made mask wearing compulsory early on and they havent been affected too badly.

He often gets the wrong end of the stick but if it's true then that's quite interesting re: mask wearing.

Edit: just checked
They introduced quite stringent measures. Worked though

Also read something about Sweden having the highest population of people living alone in Europe (don’t quote me on that but definitely a higher proportion than most)

maybe I should head over there and try my luck once all this is over !

Looking at wiki it says they started screening air passengers for temperature in Feb, closed schools early March, closed all events venues and closed borders before the masks thing on 15th March, then closed all non essential stores.

They’re not even at the outbreak stage yet, only 2 deaths. On the 14th March they’d had a total of 44 cases, first death wasn’t until the 18th when they were already locked down.

Looks like their problem will be an outbreak when lockdown removed.

Sorry if this has been posted already but on a more positive/heart warming note did everyone see the old fella who is doing a sponsored back garden walk (100
Lengths of his garden before his 100th birthday I think)

He was aiming to raise £1k....already over £7m !!!! Legend !

Yeah. Just checked and edited my post.
Their measures were quite strict though seemed to have worked so far.

I think you’re right. They have an interesting culture there where kids are seen as independent much more and for example education is their right not their parents if that makes sense. Apparently leads to them moving out almost as soon as they hit adulthood. Average age is 18-19 instead of 26 across the EU.

Politically it’s a fascinating cultural mix of independence and social infrastructure enabling it. I’m a big fan of the Swedes (and their women).

First heard this story yesterday and it was £1m, then saw it a bit later £2m, this morning on FB it was at £5m, now £7m!

At this rate this guy will be funding more of the NHS than the government!

Spot on. This is why we won’t know about all the steps taken and timings etc until this nightmare is over. Obviously if a vaccine is discovered quickly (or they remain closed off until we do) that strategy will be perfect, unfortunately I don’t think it will be that straightforward

There is no way in hell you can stand over the conscious decision to not test people in care homes. You just can't. You are knowingly sending people to- at best- sickness and a good chance of death. Call the terminology over the top if you like, perhaps "murderous negligence" might be better, but you cannot justify, explain away or justify what is happening in care homes.

Isn’t this all down to lack of testing generally? Have we ever had a reason given why our capacity is so low?

The more suspicious would say that herd immunity was never actually given up on, I don't know.

There are care home workers being refused tests on the basis that its "NHS workers only"- people should be fucking locked up when this is over. Even Ireland- tiny- is testing way more than the UK, it cannot just be some kind of problem or issue.

That wasn’t the discussion or point mate. This was about testing those returning from hospital to a care home (which I’m glad they’re now doing but thought the comments were OTT)

ok fair enough- I'm still working and grumpy and just popped over for a gander. Still- when you are refusing tests to care home workers when we apparently have all this "ramped up" capacity, can't be right.

The non testing of people heading back to a care home from hospital is negligent and will have killed countless people.

Think they are now offering testing to all care workers (agree with you about issues in the past though)

ps sticking with your work is probably more fun than catching up on here !! Couldn’t resist a quick look either though !

I hate to break it to you but they're full of shite. The additional capacity no doubt has numerous caveats like most of their headlines.
The president of the institute of biomedical sciences was on the bbc today.

There is issues with the amount of reagents available. The government was late in speaking to the chemical manufacturers about production.

I can’t even.

Those who are sympathetic to the Trumps of this world, help me out here. Is she too stupid to know what the 19 stands for or is she intentionally lying to voters to rile them up against the WHO?

I honestly don’t know which is worse.
