I fully admit, I never thought I'd get to like Vettel as much as I've grown to like him. I absolutely couldn't stand him at Red Bull (a mix of his youthful arrogance, but probably more so how the Red Bull/Helmut Marko PR machine built him) but I really have. He's been a credit to the sport, and can retire knowing he's achieved more than most ever will out of it.
So many Verstappen comparisons that it does seem like a Red bull/Marko production line. Was arrogant, aggressive, petulant when things went wrong, difficult teammate.
Had one of the great championship battles with Alonso & Ferrari.
Grown older and (with less pressure from challenging) has been an elderstatesman of F1 and not been shy on calling out on the big issues

Completely agree. Never used to like vettel especially after the malaysia ‘multi 21’ incident but he seems to have really matured into a sensible and grounded character over the years. It’s a shame he hasn’t been able to win a championship post 2013 - and he seems to have not really been the same since 2018 but all things considered he is a brilliant driver and a great guy who will be missed

For me Hockenheim 2018 was the turning point.

Winning by a mile before the rain came down, and if he would have held on i think he would have gone 50 or so points ahead in the championship.

The confidence etc that would have brought I imagine he would have won that

The tone of voice, the absolute distraught demeanor from that race was the turning point of Sebs career for me. Could have been a 5 time world champion, instead just went away into the background

If the FIA or F1 had any sense about them they'd get him straight in to direct the sport in the right way.
Should make him race director or whatever they call it. I can't believe they don't use ex drivers unless they previously have and it didn't work.

They use them for the stewards and it's a bit erratic.

Don't think you could use him as there'd be accusations of favouratism dependent on what punishments to which driver. Imagine Mick Schumacher going away scott free while Hamilton got a 10 place penalty. Even if justified, it'd lead to all kinds of cat calling (even if it would be fun to watch!).

I thought that might be a problem. They have used them in motogp & I think they still do and can't remember there being lots of problems although Freddie Spencer did upset a few with his very strict rulings. I'm not sure how someone who hasn't raced at a high standard can make judgements on racing incidents.

Great drive by Verstappen to get himself on the top step. Drives like that are what win you championships. Well, that and Ferrari not knowing how to manage the best car and driver set up they've had in a long while the absolute muppets :ROFLMAO:

Mercedes get another great and unexpected result. Can see them winning a race by the end of the season now with the improvements they have made. Reckon they could pip Ferrari to 2nd in the Constructors too.

Spa next

Long weekend at Hungarian GP.
First time in years temps have been cool - normally like an oven.
Managed to catch the Citygame and women's final in various team hospitality areas.
Ferrari's failures not a surprise - out with various team people before quali and they were joking about how Ferrari would find a way to cock it up. Recurring theme over a number of years.
Met a lot of members of the women's race teams out and about Thurs night in Budapest. Great fun and so enthusiastic about their sport.
Still issues with some drunk Dutch fans harrassing Brit families supporting Hamilton on the Friday evening - not in the circuit itself but around it.

Ah, it's not April 1st then, but is actually true.

Isn't it more Alpine want Piastri in there, so Alonso might not have had a choice to stay there?

From what I've heard, Alonso wanted more stability in terms of contract length. Alpine were offering a year plus an option, Aston offered a straight up two year deal.

I just don't see it working out well. Think Alpine are going to be closer to the front than Aston will be for some time, and he's not going to play second fiddle to daddy Stroll's little boy. Reckon tempers could fray.

It's beginning to look like Alonso has caused quite a headache at Alpine.

There's suggestions that Alpine had allowed Piastri to negotiate a move to McLaren for next season to replace Ricciardo, a driver loan if you like. To such an extent, a deal was rumoured to have actually been agreed.

Now, Alonso has gone, Alpine have decided to renage on that deal, and announce Piastri for next season alongside Ocon. Obviously, if the McLaren deal is true that means he's contracted twice for next season...

If that's the case, that's the second time this season McLaren have signed a driver, whose soon after been announced by another team (Palou in Indy was signed by McLaren, only for Chip Ganassi to put out a press release saying he was with them from next season)

This is currently what's doing the rounds on social media anyway. Who knows how true it is. I think Silly Season has gone into overdrive!

Alpine only found out Alonso had gone to Aston when they saw Aston’s press release and they believe he’s still contractually aligned to them!

Some contract lawyers are going to be making a lot of money.

I think it's been on his mind all season, honestly. At least since Melbourne. He's got no interest pottering around at the back of the grid in sub-par machinery.

Saw Vettel at Silverstone on the Saturday last year sorting out the recycling rubbish for his team. That's how much he's changed. Hated him in the past but feel the same about him as you do now.

Ricciardo gone from McLaren then, who've basically said they binned him off a year early because he's been shit. Will always be remembered for that win in Monza. Be interesting to see where he goes now, a few teams on the grid without confirmed line-ups for next season.

Kiss and make up with Alpine? Haas have been in touch but can't see him going there. Tsunoda's contract is up at the end of this year too I think so could possibly go back to Alpha Tauri.

It's been an odd spell for him. Did well at Red Bull (threatened to eclipse Vettell, could hold his own against Verstappen half the time, if only he could do it consistently...), did alright at Renault after a slow start... did get that win for McLaren! But has been poor really.

Haas seems too big a downgrade, although if Bottas can end up at Alfa Romeo, maybe it's not so daft. Alpine's an odd one, they appear to be just treading water really. Can't really see the appeal of him for Alpha Tauri, or Alpha Tauri for him so think that'd be out.

Always seems a bit odd when a driver's moved out with half a season to go, but still races. Not like he's going to be motivated to try and catch Norris up now, is it.

He says he'sstaying in F1. I don't have any reason to doubt him as of yet tbh.

Current crop of F2 drivers also not amazing, so no pressure for a superstar needing to be promoted. That one is Piastri really, who gets his gig somewhere next season at least.

He's said he wants to stay in F1 so doubt he'll go to Nascar.

My money is on a return to Alpine.
