Leaves a bad taste somewhere doesn't it. He is, of course, innocent and should be treated as such but... it's rather uncomfortable, isn't it.

If they are, she should be charged with wasting police time then...

Hopefully, after the accusations, shes has long gone from him for her own sake.
Not that I’ve seen any evidence that she has, but her getting back together with him wouldn’t prove anything about the original accusations.

Or maybe he's innocent of the charges faced ?

Who knows , none of us here do
We've all seen the video/heard the audio of him assaulting and abusing his girlfriend. That's irrefutable facts.

My mate who's a detective said the CPS have bottled it, they had all the evidence they needed to do a victimless prosecution.

Why though? Why would they bottle it? Money? Pressure? Overburdened with cases?

Yes I will imagine he will have a short break and then be back at training, they will see him as a valuable asset.
Not so sure.

He may end up playing abroad. I think there will be quite the stink kicked up over this.

Really not sure. Hope he's not back and embraced by his club. As has been said, even if innocent he sounds like a vile, horrible scumbag.

Shame they haven't gone through with it then

because they don't feel they can get a jury to convict, it's really hard to even get convictions in cases where there is almost impossible to deny evidence

ched evans basically admitted rape by having sex with someone in no state to consent but the defence pointed out she liked sex with people consently and he was aquitted

Did he admit that?

I know it is semantics but I would prefer to say he has 'not been proven guilty' rather than 'he is innocent'. I guess to some people there is no difference, but I think it is an important differential to make

I agree entirely in the eyes of the law, which is really the only thing that matters. But on a personal level I find that hard to stomach.
It doesn't look good in certain circumstances. The main problem is though that it's the road to anarchy, and genuinely innocent people being persecuted if we go full-on no smoke without fire.

Don't get me wrong, I'm deeply uncomfortable about Greenwood still being a free man but, ultimately, he has to be judged by the same basic rules and laws as the rest of us... even if it's not entirely beyond possibility that he's paid a load of people off / been able to manipulate the system with cash.

Yeah, I agree, but I wouldn't want him here at our club.

It's a difficult one isn't it.

There are multiple cases in the last five or so years involving very high profile footballers that have had fairly damning evidence (in this case audio, in others actual admission that the victim said 'no') and still no convictions. It is a fairly damning indictment on how hard it is to actually send someone down for sexual assault/rape.
There’s a case of of rape in Italy at the moment, they were only Serie C players though, but they got sentenced to 6 years; I’d be amazed if they actually serve it though.

Brand image of Man United affected if they welcome him back into the fold? Damage to the brand may outweigh his value to them as a footballer. Think there may be a backlash wherever he tries to rock up to be honest. That recording was beyond disgusting.

I read that apparently the key witnesses were no longer coming forward. Would point to lack of evidence to convict beyond reasonable doubt.

I’m a massive critic of the CPS and police in these cases, but they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t in this scenario

Was never fully convinced on the Evans case but I'm more convinced on this one that this wrong un should be behind bars, I mean, we've all heard it right? A few witnesses paid to back out here I'm guessing.

Is it only a criminal offence to intimidate witnesses or is it an offence to interfere

Apparently the girl had told police & CPS last April she wouldn't be a witness. Maybe they kept it open hoping she would change her mind.
Difficult to continue at Utd but other clubs (maybe overseas) will take him because he is a good footballer.
Expect to see some PR company organising a newspaper exclusive soon as they try to rehabilitate his image.

See you’ve heard him tell her to open her legs, and generally being unsavoury (might I add - you’re assuming it’s him) without the key witness to say this the defence will ask them to prove it was greenwood.

even if you do - you don’t know the context because the aftermath wasn’t filmed. You’ll never get a conviction on the one piece of audio.

there’s talk of further material that puts doubt on the allegations, thus without the key witness - it’ll fall down.

Conveniently they also appear to have moved on immeasurably on the field in the last 12 months.
I'd imagine the best case scenario (for both club and player) is no offer of extension to his contract - There will be takers and undoubtedly a transfer payment for Utd.
