What the fuck has happened to England (1 Viewer)

None of our attacking players last night were particularly suited to each other’s game. Sterling was awful for slowing down attacks, Kane dropping so deep that at one point he was wearing the keeper top. Needs a huge rethink. Make far more use of the wing backs in an attacking sense as well.

Oh and Pope isn’t an international keeper. He’s absolutely awful on the ball.
Yeah, Pope is a great shot stopper and ball handler, but is so poor with the ball at his feet. Proper old school type of keeper.

The shape reminded me of under Mowbray before he left, 343. Jodi jones (and I cant remember who was on the other side?) On the wings in the front 3, nullifying any wide space for the wingbacks. James managed to get forward on occasion but I cant remember Saka touching the ball in the oppossitions third. Then grealish and Shaw came on, and grealish did the exact same thing and stood on the wing, taking Shaw out the game.

I really don't get Grealish, I want to like him. All this 'he wins lots of freekicks, etc' is because he holds on to the ball for 2-3 touches too long. Great, we get a set piece but if he moved the ball quicker we may create a goalscoring opportunity from open play.

And as much as Kane is record scorer, etc, he has been so poor for England for a long time now. Too deep, too greedy.

But this all goes back to Southgate and his tactics and squad selection, players form means nothing and its all about if you're in his clique.

I do kind of get the feeling that Kane feels a bit like it is all on his shoulders. No-one else is really banging the goals in are they.

Pretty sure the alternative would be Lampard (scary!). Integrated some of the squad at Chelsea, no hassle for the FA and unlike Gerrard, think it would be his dream job.

Things look shit but Southgate has been a great tournament manager for us. Hopefully he can pull something out of the bag in Qatar.

I feel it’s unlikely though and we’re looking at a shit tournament after which he will depart.

As the Premier league is shutting down for the world cup, could we ask for someone to manage us for the month before returning to their club. They would have a good knowledge of the players, go on Pep you know you want to.

I can't remember the last time we played well to be honest. It's been a series of games now with very lacklustre performances and a lack of cohesion.
What's most worrying is how Southgate comes out after and says how happy he is with how it's gone. Talking of possession etc. but completely missing the point that we look incapable of scoring despite having some very talented attacking players and aren't winning. We're slow, ponderous, rigid and almost looked scared to try and play football. And it seems that's what he wants.

I agree. It makes my jaw drop when he is really happy with very inept performances.

We don't look very threatening at the moment and we don't look like scoring. 🤷

I'd settle for slow and ponderous, we're sodding glacial!

Watching us play from the back is (with no disrespect to to the game) like watching chess.

More accurately perhaps, it's like watching me play chess, where after 15 minutes of concentrating intensely on the seeming disasters inherent in any given move, I give up and just do something stupid anyway!

I want Southgate to succeed, I really do, but unless the plan is to literally bore teams into submission, I can't see it working...

What you need are some vibrating anal beads...

Make the game a lot more fun for you and will improve your game immeasurably (allegedly)

I watched the Milan Napoli game and he was quite poor tbh, beaten easily for the winner. But then again, some of the others don’t even play for their clubs

Yeah, he's made a few mistakes this season, lapses of concentration usually, but is still a far better bet than some of the other options.

Last game before the World Cup. Ivan Toney on the bench, because we need to have a look at what Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling can do. It's almost as if he's picked a team, scared of the flak he might get if we lose. Fact is; he will get more flak if we lose with same old, same old, rather than having a look at potential players, which is what he should be doing. I despair.

The game is a dead rubber. An opportunity to let the shackles off and experiment, but not for our Gareth. It's almost like he's just desperate to win like this to prove a point

In truth they are. If you win the World Cup with draws and penalty shoot outs no one cares

If you're talking about the great Italian sides of years gone by who could defend a 1-0 lead without flaw then I agree. But we're talking about centre backs who are nowhere near good enough to pull that off while at the same time we have genuinely world class or not-far-off world class attacking players stifled by the tactical instructions.

Hardly any of our players are world class - come off

I don't mind that line-up, as long as he does switch things about during the game and gives the likes of Toney a run out. Guehi too.

Give them both a chance and see how they do.

Would be better off if it was a friendly. He could make more changes then..

I would have preferred something a bit more experimental, but I can't say I am overly peeved.

Not much value out there tonight so had Declan Rice to have a shot on target at 3/1 and Bet365 gave me a £1 free bet credit so had Bellingham to score anytime and be booked (not at the same time as scoring!) at 64/1.

Yes - but only one side can win a competition. For the other teams a lot of what is important to their supporters is what they are watching. That's why the England side in Italy, with Gazza in it, will be remembered far beyond any of Southgate's team who made their semi- final/final.
