The latter Steve Sedgley.Who are the most underrated players during their time here, who went onto better things than they were given credit for than when here?
Can't knock Jacob Murphy being a mainstay at Newcastle for years now, even more impressive he is still getting game time after the takeover and they are fighting up the top of the PremWho are the most underrated players during their time here, who went onto better things than they were given credit for than when here?
Maddison was never not ratedMaddison certainly another
Kevin Richardson...? Blimey, he played over 500 games at a level our current lot can only dream aboutKeith o Neil
Sandy Roberts
Guy we had from villa Richardson?
Eccles...
He absolutely had big detractors on here. Particularly when he came back on loanMaddison was never not rated
would you of said he was worthy of being britains most expensive defender at the time ? I wouldn’t, perfect example of over ratedHe was outstanding for us hence Liverpool buying him,
Tbf I never rated him. I remember being really underwhelmed when we signed him.Kevin Richardson...? Blimey, he played over 500 games at a level our current lot can only dream about
He was the hottest property at the time. Versatile, fast, strong. On top of 2 really good seasons for us, he looked good at USA ‘94 too. (Even if Ireland were poor). I can understand why he cost so much. Not sure why it didn’t work for him at Liverpool. They woukd be justified in calling him over-rated. But his partnership with Atherton is one of our best ever CB pairings IMOwould you of said he was worthy of being britains most expensive defender at the time ? How the mighty have fallen. Dean Emerson now tells people he plays golf with the bloke who cuts Torchomatic's hairYeah, I was at that game. Snowy day. Nearly drove the car into a ditch on the way home.
Emerson was never the same. Still lives around here. The bloke who cuts my hair plays golf with him.

It does seem that a lot of posters on here didn't understand the OP's question!!
The most overrated for me was Richard Shaw. How a player of such limited ability played so many games for us in the PL is astonishing.
Exactly.
Konjic:
Cult hero & fans favourite because of his kamikaze dribbles but was a poor defender & spent most of his time here injured.
Oggy:
A very good goalkeeper & rightly heralded due to his longevity, but he's often hailed as our greatest ever keeper when we've had many better both before & since.
Joe Cole:
Yes it was exciting that we had a big name player when the club were in League 1, but the reality is he was miles off the pace. His only really notable contribution was the free-kick vs Barnsley & it actually disrupted our attacking output shoehorning him in.
Atherton made babb look goodHe was outstanding for us hence Liverpool buying him
Atherton made babb look good
Phil Babb
One of the best players we’ve ever had I think.I'm gonna need to duck for cover here, and to an extent I'm just being provocative. But was David Speedie quite as good as his legendary status suggests?
He was a very good player obviously, with some brilliant goals to show for it. But although we did well in the seasons after '87, I somehow felt the side was never quite as easy on the eye as the cup-winning team, and it felt like making Speedie the focus of everything was part of that change.
Poo emojis incoming!
I personally think it’s harsh. But there’s a hint of something there. I can remember wondering why Liverpool wanted to buy him off us. He was over 30 and on the wane. Was Souness going mad? Etc….I'm gonna need to duck for cover here, and to an extent I'm just being provocative. But was David Speedie quite as good as his legendary status suggests?

I remember the following conversation with him after Crystal Palace away game:One of the best players we’ve ever had I think.
Shame he seems to be an utter prat…his personality is over rated!
HahaGary Mac
*c**tI remember the following conversation with him after Crystal Palace away game:
Me: Why did you get sent off?
Speedie: I called the ref a customer.
Me: Why?
Speedie: "cause he is.
